2025 Edition of “State of RI Manufacturing” Study Launched to Capture Up-to-Date Data on Sector’s Challenges and Needs

Forward-looking economic analysis of manufacturing sector begins with survey designed to capture insights from business owners on workforce, innovation and technology

Polaris MEP, Rhode Island’s non-profit manufacturing partnership, is launching a new edition of its “State of RI Manufacturing” study. The report will provide an updated view of trends in the state’s manufacturing sector, building on the 2022 study that has since been leveraged for programming and supports for Ocean State manufacturers.

“Manufacturers are experiencing very turbulent conditions nationally and internationally, which is worrisome for a sector that accounts for 9.1% of the state’s GDP,” said Matt Watson, Center Director of Polaris MEP and 401 Tech Bridge. “It’s essential that we capture up-to-the minute data on what’s needed to keep this critical economic sector thriving and growing.”

As in 2022, the input of Rhode Island manufacturers is central to the study. Senior executives are asked to respond to a survey on workforce, growth trajectory, obstacles to success and plans for technology investments, among other topics. The survey can be found at https://go.polarismep.org/25voices.

Watson noted that the 2022 report was leveraged to modify existing or create new programs addressing technology acceleration and workforce development.

Polaris MEP is an affiliate of the national NIST Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership. Its mission is to strengthen Rhode Island’s economy by assisting RI’s small and medium-sized manufacturers.

Polaris MEP will collaborate with a variety of partners to ensure the study is comprehensive. These include Rhode Island Commerce, the Rhode Island Manufacturers Association, and Rhode Island Textile Innovation Network. Points Consulting, which conducts impact studies that answer complex economic questions for economic development boards and government agencies across 29 states, has been hired to lead the data collection and analysis.
